Visiting Prague in the summer may be quite exhausting for history buffs who need to see all the monuments, but quite a treat for those looking for fun, partying and water activities. Here are some tips on how to spend a great summer in Prague.
A hot summer day and a nice cold beer go together, that´s for sure - but where to get the best one? Join an organized beer tour, that will take you through Prague´s microbreweries, or explore the Czech beer culture on you own - perhaps at “U Pinkasů” where they boast to have a true gothic air conditioning system. In fact, you will be drinking right beside the Panny Marie Světlé Cathedral where the massive stones really have a cooling effect on the guests.
When drinking beer in Prague, you should be familiar with some new rules concerning drinking in public. Check out this map of places in Prague, where you can get a ticket - in general it concerns the Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square and some other popular tourist spots in the city centre. A new non-smoking law also became effective by the end of May, so you have to smoke your cigarette outside or pick a pub with outside seating. A great choice is to visit the beer garden of beautiful Riegrovy sady. You may find this Prague beer guide quite useful when searching for the perfect pint.
A place where drinking outside is infact the essence of the place is the famous Prague paved riverbank. Ask the locals for “náplavka” when checking out the boardwalk between the railway viaduct and the Legií bridge. This promenade by the river is full of pop-up bars, restaurants and DIY galleries and all those who have to work during the summer head here straight from the office.
Hipsters love this place too for its food festivals and farmers markets, which take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Rent a boat, a party dinghy and be up to date, about all the interesting stuff, that´s going on here by visiting the prazskenaplavky.cz website.
The “náplavka” may tempt you to jump into the river just there and cool down a bit. Well we´ll recommend you some better and cleaner spots :-) In Prague, you can choose between many public swimming pools and natural lidos. The most famous swimming pool with a large grassy sunbathing area is the Podolí swimming stadium. Right across the street lies the natural lido of Žluté lázně, where you can test the Vltava river water and enjoy yourself during many sporting and cultural activities. Not your cup of tea? Here are more swimming tips:
Petynka outdoor swimming pool - voleyball, a maxi slide and a view of the Prague Castle

Bungee jumping from bridges crossing the river is also popular and so is cliff jumping - a festival called High Jump is especially dedicated to this risky sport and is held in one flooded former quarry near Prague. When talking about quarries - they are very popular among the locals for swimming and diving. Explore the “Amerika” former mines near Beroun and visit the nearby Koněprusy caves - going underground is the smartest way to cool down during hot days.
Want to chill a bit after all those activities? Enjoy an evening at one of Prague´s summer cinemas.
The most trendy new summer cinema are the Karlin Barracks. Step into a large former marshalling yard and enjoy a movie, drinks and the industrial atmosphere.
Not far away is the legendary Karlín summer cinema next to the Invalidovna building. Very cheap tickets, screening all summer nearly every day the most recent cinema hits.
Tiskárna na Vzduchu located on the right edge of Stromovka park between the Exhibition grounds Výstaviště and Planetarium Prague. The cinema screens every Tuesday from 9 pm.
Summer in the Czech Republic is also the season of music festivals, mostly outside of Prague. Let´s name the most popular ones - the Karlovy Vary International film festival held in the beautiful spa town a 2 hour drive from Prague, the Rock for People music festival, Mighty Sounds, Masters of Rock or Colours of Ostrava in the unique industrial area of Dolní Vítkovice Ostrava.
