In May, one of the most well-known festivals of classical music takes place between the 12th of May and the 3rd of June - the Prague Spring. Musicians and singers from all around the world meet in Prague to perform classical and modern pieces in the lovely ambience of the Rudolfinum Concert Hall, the Municipal House and many churches and venues around the city. The best concerts are sold out quickly, so plan ahead.
If you're a fan of modern art more than traditional crafts, visit Prague Design Week, where you can buy original objects from local designers.
May is not only the month of music in Prague. Enthusiastic runners - both amateurs and professionals - can compete in the Volkswagen Prague Marathon. Go for the full 42km version of the race or choose one of the family runs. Lets meet at the marathon's starting point on the 5th of May right at Old Town Square. Beautiful sights of the city and great atmosphere guaranteed.
If you are more into beer than classical music, you can visit the Prague Festival of Czech Beer, where you can try all kinds of different Czech brands while listening to both traditional and progressive music. The festival is held at the Letná plain which is right next to one of the most beautiful Prague parks - an ideal spot to have a picnic or a game of pétanque with your friends. In a mood for an unorthodox drinking experience? Rent a beer or prosecco bike and pedal your way around the Letná park towards a pleasant buzz in your head.
The biggest culinary event of the year? Definitely the Prague Food festival where restaurants from all around the country showcase their best dishes. And what more - the event takes place in the unique setting of the Royal Garden of the Prague Castle, so you can combine sightseeing with culinary experiences.
When speaking about unique settings, the Mezi Ploty festival lets you enjoy music and theatre in a very unusual place - the premises of the psychiatric hospital Bohnice. The festival wishes to raise awareness about psychiatric patients and bring them closer to the world outside and vice versa.
Another interesting event is the Khamoro World Roma festival - which means “sun” in the Roma language. If you'd like to have a good time with Roma musicians and artists, this is definitely the place to put your dancing shoes on.
Since May is the month of love for the Czechs, go for some romantic activities as well. Arrange a gondola ride through the Čertovka canal, known as Prague's Venice, rent a paddle boat or sign up for a romantic cruise aboard a steamship where dinner is served and a jazz band plays by your table.
